Thomas Wheeler, CEO Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, dan istrinya sedang menyusuri jalan raya antarnegara bagian ketika menyadari bensin mobilnya nyaris habis. Wheeler segera keluar dari jalan raya bebas hambatan itu dan tak lama kemudian menemukan pompa bensin yang sudah bobrok dan hanya punya satu mesin pengisi bensin.

Setelah menyuruh satu-satunya petugas di situ untuk mengisi mobilnya dan mengecek oli, dia berjalan-jalan memutari pompa bensin itu untuk melemaskan kaki.

Ketika kembali ke mobil, dia melihat petugas itu sedang asyik mengobrol dengan istrinya. Obrolan mereka langsung berhenti ketika dia membayar si petugas. Tetapi ketika hendak masuk ke mobil, dia melihat petugas itu melambaikan tangan dan dia mendengar orang itu berkata, “Asyik sekali mengobrol denganmu.”

Setelah mereka meninggalkan pompa bensin itu, Wheeler bertanya kepada istrinya apakah dia kenal lelaki itu. Istrinya langsung mengiyakan. Mereka pernah satu sekolah di SMA dan pernah pacaran kira-kira setahun.
“Astaga, untung kau ketemu aku,” Wheeler menyombong. “Kalau kau menikah dengannya, kau jadi istri petugas pompa bensin, bukan istri direktur utama.”
“Sayangku,” jawab istrinya, “Kalau aku menikah dengannya, dia yang akan menjadi direktur utama dan kau yang akan menjadi petugas pompa bensin.”
